Binding Options for Wiro-Bound Books
You can choose from a range of options to customise your wiro-bound book to your specific needs. These choices do not alter the fundamental advantages of wiro binding. Your book will still be practical, durable, attractive, and professional. You can turn the pages 360°, lay the book completely flat, stand it up for presentations, and more.
Twin-Loop Wire Options
The twin-loop wires we use for wiro-bound books come in a variety of coated colours—such as black, white, silver, and more—and a range of sizes to suit any requirement or page count.
Common Wiro-Bound Book Sizes
The exact dimensions of your wiro-bound book will depend on its purpose, target audience, page count, and the number and type of graphics. In principle, we can create a wiro-bound book to any size specification you require. However, our experience shows it’s often better to stick to standard dimensions for most projects. This simplifies production, is more cost-effective, and ensures the final product is fit for purpose.
As a helpful guide, here are some suggested sizes for various applications, using standard Australian measurements:
- Year-end business report: A4 (210mm x 297mm) – 500 pages
- Technical or user manual: A5 (148mm x 210mm) — 236 pages
- Large format workbook: 178mm x 305mm – 120 pages
- Standard planner: A5 (148mm x 210mm) – 366 pages
However, you’re not limited to these suggestions. At QinPrinting, we’re happy to create custom wiro-bound books in any size or format you wish. Just remember that extensive customisation incurs higher costs and slower turnaround times, as it requires more pre-press work and setup.
Also, keep in mind that while similar methods like spiral binding have an upper limit of around 300 pages, wiro binding can accommodate as many pages as you need. For certain projects, the added investment in customisation may be worthwhile. The final decision is always yours.
Paper Options for Wiro-Bound Books
Depending on the application, most wiro-bound books feature colourful illustrations, diagrams, or other graphics alongside the text. To achieve the best results, we recommend printing on gloss or matte art paper. Both surfaces are ideal for vibrant colour printing that will make your visuals really stand out.
- Gloss paper is often best for books with full-colour graphics and less text.
- Matte paper is excellent for books with a greater balance of text and illustrations, as it provides superb colour reproduction while ensuring the text is easy to read.
For books that you intend for users to write in, such as workbooks or planners, we suggest an uncoated paper stock. On uncoated paper, you can easily write, annotate, or fill in forms with pencils, pens, or markers. Gloss and matte papers are not absorbent enough for these interactive uses, making uncoated paper the essential choice.

Wire-O Bound Book Design and Artwork Tips
Whether you’re preparing your own artwork or working with a professional designer, it’s important to set up your files correctly for printing. This includes allowing for bleed, safety areas, and trim lines, as well as ensuring the resolution and colour space are right.
With that in mind, here are a few useful tips to help you prepare your files for printing.
Export your files as vectors in PDF format. We recommend using professional design software like Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator. These programs will also allow you to convert your files from RGB to the CMYK colour space, which is essential for professional offset printing.
If you are using bitmap images (like those from Adobe Photoshop) instead of vectors, make sure the resolution is at least 300 DPI (dots per inch). While vector files don't have resolution limits, all other images must be high-resolution to prevent them from looking blurry or "pixelated" when printed.
You'll need to add a 3mm "bleed zone" around all edges of your artwork. The bleed is an extra margin of your design that extends beyond the final trim line. After printing, we trim the pages to their final size, and this excess is cut off. This ensures your artwork extends right to the edge of the page with no unprinted borders. Please mark bleed zones with red lines in your design file.
For a wiro-bound book, remember to leave extra space on the binding edge to allow for the punched holes. A competent book designer will understand these technical requirements—including how to digitise any traditional artwork—and we always manually check your files before going to press.
However, the responsibility for sending “print-ready” files is ultimately yours. Don’t worry, though! We are here to help you through the process, explain what’s needed, and liaise with your designer to ensure everything goes smoothly. Our goal is to deliver a perfect result.
